CCD classes begin the weekend of September 20-21, 2008. Late registrations will not be accepted.

FIRST COMMUNION PICTURES

The group pictures that were taken outside before each of the First Communion masses are now available to be picked up from the rectories. Please go to the church where your child made his/her First Communion. Pictures will only be available for pick-up until the end of June.

DO YOU FEEL A CALL TO SERVE?

Our religious education program at St. Matthias and Transfiguration has many wonderful opportunities for you to share your time and talents. The only requirement is a willingness to serve in our parish and work with our wonderful children! All training and materials are provided, for those who help. Please contact Karyn McGovern, (773) 334-6622 or kemcgovern@juno.com for more information.

CCD Catechist: Being a catechist/teacher in our CCD program is a once a week commitment from September to April on either Saturday (9-10:15 AM) or Sunday (10:45-12:00 PM). We teach the children the basics of our faith, using text books for teachers and students. We are in need of teachers and teacher assistants in several grades. This is a great opportunity for a husband/wife team or 2 friends to do together! Materials and training are provided – teaching experience is a plus, but is not required.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word: The CLW program occurs during the 9:30 AM (St. Matthias and Transfiguration) and 11:30 AM (St. Matthias) masses. Children come forward after the opening prayer and go with the teachers for about 20 minutes during which time they hear the readings and gospel at a level that is more understandable to them. This is a once a month commitment, and we have 2 people lead each session. Materials and training are provided!

Please consider how you might be able to participate in the wonderful teaching life of the Church!

Real Writing

Keep your children’s writing skills sharp over the summer. Encourage them to try a few “real writing” tasks: write a thank you note for a wonderful new gift; write a description about what is happening in a favorite picture, or write list of favorite songs, favorite characters in a movie or ideas for a birthday celebration. Suggestions for summer reading may be found at www.values4life.com.

Did You Know—New York (Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4)

With over 8.2 million residents within an area of 322 square miles (830 km²), New York City is the most densely populated city in the United States.

In 2005, nearly 170 languages were spoke in the city and 36% of its population was born outside the United States.

New York City has over 28,000 acres (113 km²) of municipal parkland and 14 miles (22 km²) of public beaches.

Though not usually associated with hurricanes, New York City is susceptible to them, most notably the 1821 Norfolk and Long Island hurricanes which flooded southern Manhattan and the New England Hurricane of 1938 which brushed the eastern end of the city.

New York City is home to some of the nation’s—and the world’s—most valuable real estate. On July 2, 2007, 450 Park Avenue was sold for $510 million, about $1,589 per square foot ($17,104/m²), breaking the record for an American office building.

Alaska

Did You Know—Alaska (Kindergarten)

There are more caribou that live in Alaska (900,000) than people (634,892).

Alaska’s biggest celebration is the summer solstice on June 21, the longest day of the year. (Almost around the clock sun).

In Talkeetna, Alaska, every mid-July is the Moose Dropping Festival. The droppings are made into jewelry and many fun games are played with them.

In Winter, the Inuit people (otherwise know as Eskimo) play a game called alqaqaq. This game is played so the sun returns quickly after a long winter.

Every February, the town of Cardova celebrates its famous Iceworm Festival. The iceworm, cousin to the earthworm, spends its life threading the tiny spaces between ice crystals searching for tasty snow algae and pollen. Its survival in such a harsh climate has always amazed Alaskans, who have been celebrating the festival since 1961.

THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS

Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists’ portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people’s expectations about him or the ways of God.

This "reversal" is at play in today’s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He— whose parched lips will say “I thirst” before he dies—is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the lifegiving waters of our baptism into his Body.

St. Matthias

Dear Parishioner,

"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Luke 18:16

Children are such an important part of our community and our faith, as they are the future of both. And the tradition of providing an outstanding Catholic education is as strong as ever at St. Matthias Transfiguration School. These are some of the incredible changes that have taken place at our school within the past few years:

  • We are technology leaders. Children in our upper grades are assigned individual laptop computers, which better prepares them for acceptance into the city’s top high schools.
  • Our project-based learning approach brings the real world to our children with assignments like creating an economic plan for a troubled nation and researching auto options to determine the best buy for a commuter family. Our preschool has received accreditation from the prestigious National Association for the Education of Young Children due to its individualized, hands-on learning.

We have set our standards high because we feel that our children deserve an exceptional education. Yet, the cost of educating our children is rising. Our goal is to keep our tuition affordable for all families and offer scholarships to our families in need, which accounts for about 30 percent of our families.

In order to meet this goal, we need support from our parishioners and friends, in addition to our faculty and families. St. Matthias Transfiguration School is launching its first Annual Fund to address the needs of our children. We invite you to be a part of our success with a contribution to our second collection at Masses on March 1 and 2. Envelopes will be in the pews. We thank you in advance for considering this contribution to the 2008 Annual Fund.

By giving to St. Matthias Transfiguration School Annual Fund, you will help our families continue to educate a new generation of leaders with Catholic values for life.

Sincerely,

Fr. Terry Keehan Sandria DeSapio
Pastor of St. Matthias and Transfiguration Parishes

TEMPTATION'S FACES

In the movie Oh God, You Devil the roles of both God and Satan were played by George Burns. This completely baffled the humans. But as “God” pointed out, the face of evil has long tried to look like God, act like God, sound like God—or at least fulfill all our expectations of what God is like and desires. This is the aspect of Jesus’ human nature that Satan attempts to prey upon in today’s Gospel. It is in our human nature to seek the easy or surface answers; it was this part of Jesus’ true human nature that was tested in the desert dryness that immediately followed his plunge into the Jordan’s baptismal waters. Our surface expectations of God are in miracle-working, power and glory, the intervention of supernatural beings on our behalf. But all of these things can be accomplished by the might of evil as well. Jesus takes us deeper and shows us that, even when we’re at our weakest (as he would have been in the desert after his forty-day ordeal), we need to be relentless in seeking the true presence of God’s word, giving our worship to God alone, testing ourselves and not God.
