A Letter from Father Terry

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

We hear three more parables in today’s Gospel, two of them referring to seeds. Last week we heard the parable of the sower and we see that Jesus liked the comparison of the Kingdom of God with growing, planting and harvesting seeds. The Gospel this week concludes as it did last week with the challenge, “Whoever has ears ought to hear.” This underscores the significance of listening to the word of God and listening to the world around us. Sometimes we create such busy lives—we fill our days with so much that it becomes difficult to stop and reflect on life and on God’s word. This coming week I am going to the Bellermine Retreat House in Barrington, Illinois for my annual retreat. Each year I do a silent directed retreat that creates time to reflect and uses the wisdom of a trained director. I would be happy to give you details about this kind of retreat but more importantly I would encourage you to do a retreat, even if just for a couple of days, to assist in the word of God becoming more fruitful in your heart and soul.

This weekend we welcome Fr. Zygmunt Ostrowski, SChr from the Society of Christ. The Society was established in 1932 in Poland. This religious congregation of priests work in 18 countries on all seven continents. Many of them work as missionaries. Fr. Zygmunt will share his experiences with us and ask for our assistance in the second collection at Transfiguration. Next weekend, July 26 & 27, Fr. Zygmunt will join us at St. Matthias and ask for assistance. Please consider a generous donation to His congregation.

As I have mentioned before, Bishop Francis Kane and I have been working with a group that has helped St. Matthias and Transfiguration to evaluate our collaborative efforts. Over 30 parishioners from both parishes participated in task forces that examined revenue at both parishes, expenses at both parishes and revenue and expenses at St. Matthias Transfiguration School. The most significant area of focus for these efforts has been on our administrative costs and structure. As a result of this process, Jerry Riordan’s position of Business Manager has been eliminated. Jerry has helped both parishes signifycantly for the past eight years. He has shared so much of his knowledge and expertise with us to help our communities grow. We are deeply grateful to Jerry for his many contributions and we will miss him greatly

This is the most successful speaker series for Young Adults in the world and our Ravenswood Catholic Young Adults are pleased to be a part of Theology on Tap again this year. It will be held on Wednesdays at 7:30 at St. Benedict Parish in Heidenreich Hall. We welcome Fr. Bill O’Shea this Wednesday, July 23 and he will enlighten us regarding “How the Gospels Were Written.” Please encourage your young adult (20-40) children, friends and family members to attend. Theology on Tap is a great way to get to know new friends and participate in lively discussion on relevant topics.

Reason #6
People need our Prayers. We can pray for other people anytime, but when we pray for others during Mass, we pray in a special way. It doesn’t matter if the other people are separated from us by distance or death. The Mass brings us together in the Body of Christ, and we become the communion of saints. It is part of the cosmic dimension of the Mass that unites heaven and earth by reaching across time and space.

A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

Oímos tres más parábolas en el Evangelio de hoy, dos de los tres refiriéndose a semillas. La semana pasada nosotros oímos la parábola del sembrador y nosotros vemos que Jesus quiso la comparación del Reino de Dios con crecer, plantar y cosechar las semillas. El Evangelio que esta semana concluye como la semana pasada con el desafío, "quienquiera que tiene orejas debían oír". Esto acentúa el significado del escuchar la palabra de Dios y escuchando el mundo alrededor de nosotros. A veces nosotros creamos vidas ocupadas—llenamos nuestros días con tantas cosas que es difícil de parar y reflejar en la vida y en la palabra de Dios. Esta semana me voy a la Casa de la Retirada en Barrigton, Illinois para mi retirada anual. Cada año yo hago una retirada silenciosa que crea tiempo para que yo puedo reflejar. La retirada utiliza la sabiduría de un director entrenado. Sería feliz de darle detalla acerca de esta clase de la retirada pero lo que es más importante es hacer una retirada, incluso si justo unos días, para participar en la palabra de Dios llegando a ser más fructífero en el corazón y el alma.

Este fin de semana nosotros hangan bienvenido al Padre Zygmunt Ostrowski de la b. La Sociedad fue establecida en 1932 en Polonia. Esta congregación religiosa de sacerdotes trabaja en 18 países en siete continentes. Muchos de ellos trabajan como misioneros. Padre Zygmunt compartirá sus experiencias con nosotros y pedirá nuestra ayuda en la segunda colección en Transfiguración. Próximo fin de semana, 26 y 27 de julio, Padre Zygmunt nos unirá en San Matías y pide ayuda. Considere por favor un donativo generoso a su congregación.

Como he mencionado antes, el Obispo Francis Kane y yo han estado trabajando con un grupo que ha ayudado a San Matias y Transfiguración para evaluar nuestros esfuerzos cooperativos. A consecuencia de este proceso, la posición de Jerry Riordan, Director de Negocios, ha sido eliminada. Jerry ha ayudado ambas parroquias apreciablemente para los pasados ocho años. Necesitamos oraciones. Podemos orar para otras personas en cualquier momento, pero cuando oramos para otros durante la Misa, nosotros oramos en una manera especial. To the Good People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration

I hope that besides the quality of goodness that is so much yours, that you also are a people of great patience. Two Sunday’s ago Fr. Terry wrote in his column that I would be with you on the weekend of July 5th and 6th. And that was the plan. However… let me share the details.

On June 16th, Bishop Perry called me and told me that the Cardinal wanted me to return to retirement on June 30th and a the newly appointed priest would arrive at Infant Jesus of Prague Parish on July 1st. On June 28th, Bishop Perry told me that although the new priest was ready to take over, his replacement was unable to go forward with his commitment. Consequently, the drawing board had to be brought out again.

Even so, the Bishop told me that I could continue with my plans to move back north, if I needed to. After some thought, prayer and conversation with an older priest friend, I determined that to leave Infant Jesus under these circumstances would only cause more harm than good, and that the work of the past seven months would be jeopardized. I then called the Bishop to tell him that I would continue here until the new priest was able to take over.

I hope you understand my reasoning. Please know that I look forward to being with you again, and I am hopeful that my return will be soon.

Last week her words encouraged us to see the importance of the special message God has for us during the Eucharist. She then writes:

Reason # 5
We need to talk to God. When we go to Mass, we speak to God through singing, our communal responses and prayers, and our personal prayers from the depths of our hearts. During the Mass, we have the opportunity to ask God for what we need, promise God that we will do what He wants us to do, and thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us.

Espero que aparte de la calidad de la bondad que sean tanta suyos, que ustedes también tienen gran paciencia. Hace dos semanas que el Padre Terry escribió en su columna que estaría con ustedes en el fin de semana el dia 5 or 6 de julio. Y eso fue el plan. Sin embargo… permitime que compartir los detalles.

En el 16 de junio, el Obispo Perry me llamó y me dijo que el Cardinal me deseé que volviera a la jubilación en el 30 de junio y un sacerdote nuevamente designado llegaría en Niño Jesus de Parroquia de Praga el primero de julio. En el 28 de junio, el Obispo Perry me dijo que aunque el nuevo sacerdote estuviera listo para tomar mi lugar, su reemplazo no pudo avanzar con su compromiso. Consecuentemente, tuvimos que comenzar del principio.

Aún, el Obispo me dijo que podría continuar con mis planes para regresar al norte, si lo necesitaba. Después de alguna consideración, oración y conversación con un sacerdote mayor, yo determiné que dejar Niño Jesus bajo estas circunstancias sólo causaría más daño que bueno, y que el trabajo de los pasados siete meses sería arriesgado. Yo entonces llamé al Obispo a decirlo que continuaría aquí hasta que el nuevo sacerdote pudiera tomar mi lugar.

Espero que ustedes comprenden mi razonamiento. Sepa por favor que espero está con ustedes otra vez, y yo soy optimista que mi regreso será pronto.

Las bendiciones de Dios en todos ustedes. Ustedes están en mis pensamientos, mis oraciones, y en mi corazón.

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

We continue to hear from the Gospel of Matthew this week with two interesting and thought provoking comments. First, “….for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones.” This suggests that we do not always have to be wise and learned to experience the important things that God reveals to us through Jesus Christ. This is complimented by the follow up statement, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” I really believe that the Lord is encouraging us to bring our burdens and labors to him in prayer and offer them along with our giftedness and our hopes. A great way to do this is at the Offertory of Mass. As fellow parishioners bring the gifts forward, let those elements of bread, water and wine symbolize your burdens, labors, hopes and joys. Through and along with, the simple gesture of the priest offer them up to God as a part of who you are. It will certainly change each week and that will be one more way that the Eucharist will be fresh and alive each time you gather to celebrate with our community.

As I mentioned last week Daniel Jennings will no longer be our Music Director at St. Matthias. We will have a gathering to thank him sometime in the coming month or so. We will obviously miss Daniel and we thank him for sharing his talent with us for these past several years. Jennifer Reckamp, our regular cantor has generously agreed to assume the duties of Music Director. This entails much coordination, planning and direction. Jennifer will continue to sing at Mass and teach music at St. Matthias Transfiguration School. We have some very good leads for an accompanist who will help her to balance these many duties. I will share more details in the coming weeks.

I want to thank so many of you who have responded to our ongoing Stewardship Program. As you know Stewardship is an attitude of thanks to God for the many gifts that we have been given. We are encouraged to share our TIME, TALENT and TREASURE with our local faith community in response to the many ways that God has blessed us. Many of you have signed up for ministries and have given your time by volunteering and supporting many of our two-parish organizations, functions, ministries and programs. Thank You!! We are asked to consider giving 2 % of our Gross annual income to the church as our Stewardship of Treasure. Many of us can give even more. Some of you can’t give that much. God understands that. I ask that you prayerfully consider a regular gift to our parishes. Simply divide 2% of your gross annual income by 52 and that gives you a suggested weekly offering. If you would like to give electronically there are forms in St. Matthias church to assist you. You can also call the rectory. Thanks again for your generosity.

Reason #4
God has a special message for us. When we listen to the readings, the homily, and the prayers at Mass, God speaks to us in a special way. We should come away from each Mass with at least one inspiration that will impact our lives in some way. We just have to pay attention and be open to what the Lord is trying to tell us.

The Liturgy Committee at Transfiguration has been considering some changes in the Sanctuary area that will assist us in celebrating the Eucharist. These changes will enable all of the choirs to face the congregation and thus more prayerfully lead us in song. This is the simple suggestion from the Liturgical guidelines that give our world-wide church advice on our worship experience. We will create a bigger space for the piano and choir, add microphones and make some other changes. More details will follow.

A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

Esta semana seguimos escuchando el Evangelio de Mateo que tiene dos comentarios interesantes. Primero, "...aunque hayas escondido estas cosas de los sabios lo has revelado a los chiquitos." Esto sugiere que no siempre tenemos que ser sabios para sentir las cosas importantes que Dios nos revela por medio de Jesucristo. Esto es complementado por la siguiente frase, "Ven a mi, todos los que trabajan y son oprimidos, y te dare descanso." Realmente creo que Dios nos anima a llevarle nuestras cargas y nuestros trabajos en oracion para ofrecerlos con nuestros dones y esperanzas. Un buen modo de hacer esto es durante el Ofertorio en Misa. Mientras otros feligreses brindan sus dones, dejemos que esos elementos de pan, agua, y vino simbolizen sus cargas, trabajos, esperanzas, y felicidades. Tambien durante y con el gesto simple del sacerdote ofreciendo estos dones a Dios como parte de quien eres. Definitivamente va a cambiar cada semana y eso sera un modo mas en que la Eucaristia seguira siendo fresca y viva cada vez que te reunas a celebrar con nuestra comunidad.

Como mencione la semana pasada, Daniel Jennings no sera nuestro Director de Musica en San Matias. Tendremos una celebracion en agradecimiento a el algun dia durante este mes. Obviamente extrañaremos a Daniel y le damos gracias por brindarnos su talento estos años. Jennifer Reckamp, nuestra cantante regular, esta de acuerdo en asumir las responsabilidades como Directora de Musica. Esto trae mucha coordinacion, planificacion, y direccion. Jennifer seguira cantando en Misa y enseñandola en la Escuela de San Matias Transfiguracion. Tenemos algunas personas en mente para un acompañante que le ayude a balancear sus responsabilidades. Quiero agradecerle a tantas personas que han respondido a nuestro Programa de Administracion. Como ya sabian, la Administracion es una actitud de gracias a Dios por tantos dones que hemos recibido. Nos anima a prestar nuestro TIEMPO, TALENTO, y TESORO con nuestra comunidad de fe local en respuesta a tantas cosas con que Dios nos ha bendito. Muchos de ustedes se han anotado para los ministerios brindandonos su tiempo libre y han apoyado nuestras organizaciones de las parroquias, funciones, ministerios y programas. Gracias!! Nos pide que demos 2% de nuestro Ingreso Bruto Anual a la iglesia como parte de nuestro Tesoro de Administracion. Muchos de nosotros hasta podemos dar mas. Algunos de ustedes no pueden dar mucho. Dios nos dan un mensaje especial. Cuando escuchamos las lecturas, la homilia, y las oraciones en Misa, Dios nos habla de manera especial. Deberiamos salir de cada Misa con aunquesea una inspiracion que nos impacte nuestras vidas de alguna manera. Solo tenemos que poner cuidado y estar atentos a lo que Dios nos esta tratando de decir.

El Comite de Liturgia en Transfiguracion esta considerando algunos cambios en el area del Santuario que nos ayudara a celebrar la Eucaristia. Estos cambios haran que los coros esten frente a la congregacion y asi nos dirigen mejor en las canciones. Esta es una sugerencia de las reglas Liturgicas que nos aconseja nuestra iglesia mundial sobre nuestra experiencia de adoracion. Vamos a creas un espacio mas grande para el piano y el coro, agregar microfonos, ademas de otros cambios. Luego dare mas detalles.

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

One of the most festive celebrations that we have in our two-parish community is Flores De Maria. This event is always celebrated anywhere from the middle to the end of May and also marks the anniversary of the Tagalog Mass at Transfiguration. As you know, Trans is the only parish in the city of Chicago to celebrate Mass in Tagalog every Sunday evening at 5 pm. This years Flores De Maria celebration generated $5,374.89 and a generous $4,000 donation to Transfiguration. The remaining funds are used for the ongoing operation of the weekly Mass and other activities. We heartily thank the Tagalog Mass Core Group for their support and generosity to Transfiguration.

I spoke with Fr. Frank Cimarrusti today and he is looking forward to re-joining us at St. Matthias and Transfiguration. Fr. Frank will celebrate Mass again here beginning next weekend, July 5 & 6.

We need to be part of a community. When we come together at Mass to pray and worship God, we fulfill a deep need inside of us to be in communion with other people. The other parishioners—even if we don’t know all of them—give us support, affirmation and encouragement in our attempt to live the Gospel message. They help us to see that we are not alone. They remind us that we are all part of the Body of Christ.

Una de las celebraciones mas festivas que tenemos en nuestra comunidad de dos parroquias es Flores de Maria. Este evento siempre se celebra a mediados de mayo o a finales de mayo y tambien es el aniversario de la Misa en Tagalo en Transfiguracion. Como ya saben, Transfiguracion es la unica parroquia en Chicago que celebra Misa en Tagalo cada domingo a las 5 pm. Este año recaudamos $5,374.89 en la celebracion de Flores de Maria y tuvimos una donacion generosa de $4,000 a Transfiguracion. Los fondos que sobraron de esta celebracion los usamos para la operacion semanal de la Misa y otras actividades. Le agradecemos al Tagalog Mass Core Group por su apoyo y generosidad a Transfiguracion.

Hoy hable con el Padre Frank Cimarrusti y el esta emocionado de regresar con nosotros. El Padre Cimarrusti celebrara la Misa otra vez empezando la proxima semana, 5 y 6 de julio.

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

Every week through the generosity and skill of people at the J.S. Paluch Company and Joan Hunt, Elizabeth Ledesma, Zulma Arevelo and sometimes Grayce O’Toole here at St. Matthias and Transfiguration, we have a beautiful and informative BULLETIN that facilitates the sharing of important information and spiritual enrichment. For the past eight months we have printed the Mission Statement of our two-parish community on the front page of the Bulletin. This is a statement that guides all of our efforts and particularly those that pertain to working together between St. Matthias and Transfiguration. Part of the Mission Statement reads, “…to share our resources and to build a more collaborative faith community.”

Cardinal George asked us to for increased collaboration nine years ago. We have gathered during those nine years to discuss and share ideas pertaining to collaboration. For the past year and one half our efforts have been guided by a Planning Committee organized by out Vicar, Bishop Francis Kane and I. The Committee includes several people who have a lot of expertise in the areas or Stewardship, Real Estate, Organizational Structure, Finanace and Marketing. I have shared their names with you in this space several times. We then organized Task Forces comprised of parishioners of BOTH Parishes to increase revenue at BOTH Parishes, to cut costs at BOTH Parishes and St. Matthias Transfiguration School. These cost cutting efforts are simply the parish’s responsibility to use our resources the BEST way we can to serve our community and to be as efficient as possible to facilitate continued collaboration. Much of our cost cutting and increased service efforts have focused on our Administrative or Office structure. We are considering some significant changes with our office structure that will focus on the increased use of technology and streamlining some of the office efforts. Many of you have responded very generously in increasing your weekly offerings because we asked you to be good stewards. We must be good stewards of the financial and personnel resources that we have been given and that you contribute towards. I will be sharing more details with you in the coming weeks and months. Thank you for your support.

Americo, Sandra Mejia, Ann Cully, Blaire Flores, The Juzz Dance Group, Sue Nguyen, Collette Mikrut Jack Hetland and St. Thecla Parish for promoting the raffle and assisting with Last Sundays drawing event. Also thanks to Bugs Bagadiong and Lito Martinez for making the new Raffle Bin that will be used to draw tickets for many raffles in the future. Without a doubt though, the most dedicated promoter and organizer of the car raffle was Patrick Kempf. A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

Cada semana por la generosidad y capacidad de gente como la compañia J.S. Paluch y Joan Hunt, Elizabeth Ledesma, Zulma Arevalo y a veces Grayce O'Toole aqui en San Matias y Transfiguracion, tenemos un BOLETIN bello e informativo que facilita la informacion importante y enriquecimiento espiritual. Durante los pasados ocho meses hemos imprimido la Declaracion de nuestra comunidad de dos-parroquias en la portada del Boletin. Esta declaracion nos guia en todos nuestros esfuerzos y especialmente a los que se refieren a trabajar con ambas parroquias. Parte de la Declaracion dice, "...para ofrecer recursos y construir una comunidad de fe mas colaboradora.

"Hace nueve años, el Cardenal Francis George nos pidio que aumentaramos nuestra colaboracion. Durante estos años nos hemos reunido para hablar de ideas relacionadas a la colaboracion. En el ultimo año y medio nuestros esfuerzos han sido guiados por el Comite de Planificacion organizado por nuestro Vicario, el Obispo Francis Kane, y yo. El Comite incluye varias personas con mucha experiencia en areas de Administracion, Bienes Raices, Estructura Organizada, Finanzas y Mercadeo. En varias ocasiones he escrito sus nombres en este espacio. Despues organizamos un grupo que se compone de feligreses de AMBAS parroquias llamado, Task Forces, para aumentar ingresos en AMBAS parroquias, cortar gastos en AMBAS parroquias y en la escuela. Estos esfuerzos de cortar gastos es responsabilidad de nuestra parroquia para usar nuestros recursos de la MEJOR manera posible para servir nuestra comunidad y ser mas eficiente para facilitar colaboracion continua. Muchos de nuestros esfuerzos de aumentar servicios y cortar gastos se han enfocado en nuestra estructura Administrativa. Estamos considerando cambios significativos con nuestra estructura en la oficina y nos vamos a enfocar en usar mas tecnologia. Muchos de ustedes han respondido generosamente en aumentar sus ofrendas semanales porque les hemos pedido ser buenos administradores. Tenemos que ser buenos administradores de nuestros recursos financieros y personales que ustedes nos han dado. Estare dando mas detalles en las proximas semanas y meses. Gracias por su apoyo.

A Letter From Father Terry

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

This weekend we salute our Fathers and those who play fatherly roles in our lives. We wish these men a Happy Fathers Day and acknowledge the critical part that they play in our families and our world. We also use this day to draw the wining tickets for the Transfiguration Car Raffle and other raffle prizes including a beautiful picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We will draw these winners at a picnic gathering on the lawn at Transfiguration between the rectory and the church. Please bring your blanket, drinks and salads. We will provide hotdogs and hamburgers and grills. You will obviously have a final chance to purchase tickets and all of this will follow the 12:30 Mass.

It is with great sadness and profound gratitude that we say farewell to Daniel Jennings, our Music Director at St. Matthias. His last weekend with us will be June 28 & 29. Daniel has been a guiding light and a source of beautiful music and prayer for us for the past four and one half years. He has coordinated, sang, conducted, helped with the planning of liturgies- welcomed guest musicians, developed our choir and all on a “part-time” basis. Daniel is a social worker by profession and directs a clinic for Community Counseling Centers of Chicago, an agency that serves adults with serious mental illness. As his responsibilities continue to increase it has become more and more difficult for him to balance his duties as our Director of Music in addition to his full-time job. Please join me in wishing Daniel well and hopefully he will be able to assist us periodically in the future. God Bless you Daniel!

Peg Wills is proud to present the Five Month Report for our Reach Out Program at St. Matthias. With the help of our St. Matthias Transfiguration School Children and many of you generous parishioners 536 breakfasts were served to our visitors from January 1 thru May 31. Before returning to the cold our guests were given a bag lunch and, often times, dry socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap. New warm gloves, caps and scarves were also available to them. Many found dry shoes, jackets, pants, sweaters and warm shirts in our closet. With the economy being what it is and what it may be, we may have more of a demand for the following items: Canned Soups, Meats, Coffee, Tea, Sugar, Dish Soap, Laundry Soap and Paper Products (Bathroom Tissues, Paper Towels and Napkins)

Every week the Panera Bakery has been making a generous donation of bread. Ours is an EMERGENCY Pantry. WE DO NOT KEEP FRESH PRODUCE OR MEATS. We also have been given a donation of 13 Sports coats of various colors, sizes 40-44 Regular and dress pants sizes 32-34 waist. If you need a sports coat and pants or know someone who does, please stop by the lower level of the rectory at St. Matthias and talk with Peg Wills.

This week we continue to reprint excerpts from a pamphlet called, “Why Do We Have To Go To Mass?” written by Lorene Hanley Duquin and published by Our Sunday Visitor. Here are 10 good reasons. Last week her words encouraged us to make one day per week a Holy Day. She then writes:

Reason #2
Jesus gives us the gift of himself. When we go to Mass (celebrate the Eucharist), we are doing what Jesus commanded his followers to do. It is a command to love and to be loved by God. Jesus offers himself to us in the Word of God that we hear and in his Real Presence, offered to us in the Sacrament of Communion.

Esta semana saludamos a nuestros Padres y a los que son como padres para nosotros. Les deseamos un Feliz Día del Padre y reconocemos que son importantes para nuestras familias y nuestro mundo. Este día también tendremos un ganador para la Rifa del Carro en Transfiguración y otros premios incluyendo una foto hermosa de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Tendremos un picnic en el pasto en medio de la Rectoría y la Iglesia. Por favor traigan sus cobijas, bebidas, y ensaladas. Nosotros tendremos los perros calientes, hamburguesas, y los asadores. Ustedes obviamente tendrán otra oportunidad de comprar boletos y todo esto será después de la Misa de las 12:30.

Con mucho dolor y agradecimiento le decimos adiós a Daniel Jennings, nuestro Director de Música en San Matías. Su última semana con nosotros será el 28 y 29 de junio. Durante los últimos cuatro años y medio, Daniel nos a servido como una luz que nos guía y fuente de música y oraciones bellas. El ha coordinado, cantado, conducido, y nos ha ayudado a planear las liturgias- darle la bienvenida a otros músicos, desarrollado nuestro coro y todo como tiempo-medio. Daniel es un trabajador social y dirige una clínica para los Centros Comunitarios de Conserjería de Chicago, una agencia que ayuda a adultos con graves enfermedades mentales. Ahora que sus responsabilidades siguen aumentando, se le ha puesto más difícil balancear su trabajo como nuestro Director de Música además de su trabajo-completo. Peg Wills se enorgullece en presentarnos el Reporte de Cinco Meses de nuestro Programa Reach Out en San Matías. Con la ayuda de los estudiantes de San Matías Transfiguración y muchos de nuestros feligreses, 536 desayunos se sirvieron a visitantes desde el primero de enero hasta el 31 de mayo. Antes de regresar al frió, nuestros visitantes recibieron una bolsa con almuerzo y a veces medias (calcetas), cepillos de dientes, colinos, y jabón. También recibieron guantes nuevos, gorros, y bufandas. Algunos encontraron zapatos, chaquetas (chamarras), pantalones, suéteres, y camisas para el frió en nuestros almarios. Con la economía como esta y como va a estar, vamos a necesitar más de los siguientes artículos: Sopas Enlatadas, Carnes, Café, Te, Azúcar, jabón para la cocina, jabón para la ropa, y productos de papel (pañuelos, toallas de papel, y servilletas).

Cada semana Panera Bakery ha dado una donación generosa de pan. Nuestra despensa es para EMERGENCIAS. NO TENEMOS CARNES NI PRODUCTOS FRESCOS AGRICOLAS. También hemos recibido donaciones de 13 chaquetas deportivas de diferentes colores, las tallas son 40-44 Regular y pantalones de talla 32-34 cintura. To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

This weeks Gospel from Matthew recounts one of his own powerful experiences as Jesus invites him to be one of his followers. Matthew was a tax collector and thus despised by so many in the community. At a dinner at Matthews’s house later Jesus overhears the religious authorities wondering why Jesus eats and associates with sinners. We are invited to see that Jesus did not come to call righteous people but sinners. We are invited to see that it is Mercy (compassion) God desires, not (religiosity) sacrifice.

Our recent Global Fest Mass was a festive celebration of our multi-ethnicity. I want to thank Deacon Roland Merced for assisting with much of the Tagalog prayers, Maria Caparoso for leading us in the Spanish music, Amor Saenz and the Transfiguration Choir for singing in Tagalog, Elizabeth Melinkovich for reading in German, Sandra Mejia for reading in Spanish and Daniel Jennings for coordinating so much of the details of the liturgy. Thanks to and all who donated crosses from various countries that added to the celebration and to the world-wide celebration of the Trinity that was part of the focus of the Mass. The Global Fest has realized $44,100 of profit with some monies still coming in. Again thanks to Deb Bukovy, Sandria DeSapio and many dedicated parents and friends for their hard work.

Fr. Rudnik, Fr. Sanaghan and myself will join our fellow priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago for the bi annual Priests Convocation from Monday, June 16 until Thursday, June 19. On some of those days we will have a communion service instead of morning Mass. Members of our staff will lead us in prayer that will include everything except the consecration. Please pray for us as we take this time together to reflect on our mission and identity as diocesan priests which is different from the various religious order priests.

St. Matthias is pleased to offer a new program, again as a part of our increased stewardship efforts. The program is The Interfaith Union and it is a resource for people who are dating or intermarried of all religious traditions-Christian, Jewish, Muslim and others. As I have said before, one half of all weddings that I preside over are between a Catholic and a non- Catholic. This speaks to the religious pluralism that composes part of the fabric of religious practice here in America. This group provides support, mentoring, community and formation for couples who are thinking about getting married or already married and come from different faith traditions. HERE ARE THE TEN GOOD REASONS TO GO TO MASS

1. God asks us to make one day holy. God asks us to set aside one day to refocus physically, mentally and spiritually. We live in a secular world. Going to Mass helps us to see everything from a different perspective. We begin to see in the depths of our being that God is in charge. We can let go of our own agenda because we know that God will inspire us, guide us and strengthen us for the week ahead.

A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

El Evangelio de Mateo cuenta de sus experiencias poderosas mientras que Jesus lo invita a ser uno de sus discipulos. Mateo es un colector de impuestos y era odiado por muchos en su comunidad. Despues en la cena que tuvieron en la casa de Mateo, Jesus escucho que las autoridades se preguntaban porque Jesus comia y se asociaba con los pecadores. Somos invitados a ver que Jesus no vino para llamar a la gente honrada, pero a los pecadores. Somos invitados a ver que es la Misericordia (compasion) que Dios desea, no el sacrificio (religioso).

Nuestra reciente Misa del Festival Global fue una celebracion muy festiva de nuestra comunidad multietnica. Quiero agradecerle al Diacono Roland Merced por ayudarnos con las oraciones en Tagalo, a Maria Caparroso por guiarnos con la musica en español, a Amor Saenz y el Coro de Transfiguracion por cantar en Tagalo, a Elizabeth Melinkovich por leer en Aleman, a Sandra Mejia por leer en español, y a Daniel Jennings por coordinar muchos detalles de la liturgia. Gracias a todos los que donaron cruces de diferentes paises que agregaron a la celebracion y a la celebracion mundial de la Santa Trinidad que fue parte del enfoque de la Misa. To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

We return to Ordinary Time this weekend after a very special Lent, Easter and Solemnities during which we marked the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ. These have been unique celebrations that help us to re-affirm our essential beliefs. Ordinary Time is a season of the Church year that helps us to embrace one of the Gospels and this year that is Matthew. This weeks Gospel according to Matthew helps us to see the importance of putting our faith into action and thus doing the will of the gracious God who created and sustains us.

On Friday evening we gathered with our Eighth Graders and their families to mark their completion of the academic and spiritual requirements of St. Matthias Transfiguration School. We congratulate our 25 graduates and wish them well in the next phase of their academic and spiritual formation. We are very proud of these young parishioners and confident that we have given them a solid foundation from which to proceed. 14 will attend Catholic High Schools, 1 Northside College Prep, 1 Lincoln Park International Baccalaureate, 4 Lane Tech, 2 Mather and 4 North town Charter.

As I mentioned last week, so many of our parishioners shared their time and talent to make Global Fest such a success. Sandria DeSapio, Deb Bukovy (Marketing) and Terry Tuohy (Development) from our staff took the lead and guided many others in the effort. Many Thanks to the following:

I want to convey a particular message of gratitude to all of our teachers because they have been guiding our students in the learning process of the various countries and coordinating so many of the details. Thanks also to our students who once again helped us to see the rich diversity of our world and our neighborhood.

This week we continue to reprint excerpts from a pamphlet called, “Why Do We Have To Go To Mass?” written by Lorene Hanley Duquin and published by Our Sunday Visitor. Last week her words cautioned us about negative thinking. She then writes:

“Think Positive- What if you changed your attitude about going to Mass? What if you began to think of Mass as a time in the day when you can connect with God and with other people in a special way? What if you concentrated on the things you like about your parish instead of what you don’t like? What if you made Mass a priority? The effects of these kinds of positive attitudes may surprise you. Research studies show that people who go to church every week are:

• less likely to suffer from depression
• less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol
• more likely to have a solid sense of right and wrong
• more likely to live a longer and happier life

A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

Esta semana regresamos al Tiempo Ordinario despues de una Cuaresma, Pascua y Solemnidades especiales donde marcamos la Santisima Trinidad y el Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo. Estas han sido celebraciones especiales que nos ayudan a reafirmar nuestras creencias esenciales. El Tiempo Ordinario es una temporada del de la Iglesia que nos ayuda a aceptar el Evangelio de Mateo. El Evangelio de esta semana segun San Mateo nos ayuda a ver la importancia de actuar con fe y hacer la voluntad del Dios cordial que nos creo y nos mantiene.

El viernes nos reunimos con los estudiantes de octavo grado y sus familias para marcar el cumplimiento de sus requisitos academicos y espirituales en la Escuela de San Matias Transfiguracion. Felicitamos a los 25 graduados y les deseamos suerte en la proxima etapa de su formacion academica y espiritual. Estamos orgullosos de estos feligreses jovenes y tenemos confianza de que les hemos dado una base solida para poder avanzar. Catorce seguiran a Secundarias Catolicas, 1 a Northside College Prep, 1 a Lincoln Park International Baccalaureate, 4 a Lane Tech, 2 a Mather, y 4 a North Town Charter.

Como mencione la semana pasada, muchos de nuestros feligreses han brindado su tiempo y talento para hacer de nuestra Fiesta Global un exito. Sandria DeSapio, Deb Bukovy (Mercadeo), y Terry Tuohy (Desarrollo) de nuestros empleados guiaron a muchas personas con este esfuerzo. Gracias a las siguientes personas:

Quiero expresar un mensaje especial de agradecimiento a todos nuestros profesores porque han guiado a nuestros estudiantes en el proceso de aprendizaje de varios paises y por coordinar tantos detalles. Gracias a nuestros estudiantes que tambien nos ayudaron a ver la diversidad de nuestro mundo y de nuestra vecindad.

Esta semana seguimos escribiendo pasajes de un panfleto llamado, "Porque Tenemos Que Ir A Misa?" escrito por Lorene Hanley Duquin y publicado por Our Sunday Visitor. La semana pasada sus palabras nos advirtieron no tener pensamientos negativos. Ahora escribe:

"Piensa Positivo- Que tal si cambiaras tu actitud de ir a Misa? Que tal si empezaras a pensar de que la Misa es el momento para conectarte con Dios y con otras personas de manera especial? Que tal si te concentraras en las cosas que te gustan de tu parroquia en vez de en lo que no te gusta? Que tal si hicieras que la Misa sea una prioridad? Los efectos de estas actitudes positivas te podrian sorprender. Los estudios muestran que las personas que van a la iglesia cada semana son:

• menos probables a sufrir de depresion
• menos probables a abusar de drogas o alcohol
• mas probables a tener un sentido solido de lo correcto y lo incorrecto
• mas probables a vivir vidas largas y felices

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of The Body and Blood of Christ. This feast helps us to see that through the REAL presence of Jesus in the Bread made Body and the Wine made Blood, we have a concrete way to connect with our Lord. This simple, yet ingenious act on Jesus’ part feeds us spiritually and helps us to value each others presence as well as the Lord’s.

We also celebrate Memorial Day which encourages us to remember those who have died defending and creating the banner of freedom that we rest beneath every day of our lives. A great way to celebrate would be to attend Mass at either parish, Trans 8:15 am and Matthias 9 am.

Last weekend we had not one but two huge celebrations - Our Global Fest on Saturday at St. Matthias Transfiguration School and our Flores De Maria on Sunday at Transfiguration. I want to thank Deb Bukovy who coordinates the Marketing and Promotion of our School and many of our parents, children, staff and faculty members who worked so hard on this great multi-cultural event. I will provide a few more details about Global Fest in next weeks bulletin.

Flores De Maria is a festive Filipino celebration that marks two things. First of all each year we celebrate the anniversary of the Tagalog Mass at Transfiguration. Each Sunday evening for the past eight years we have had Mass in Tagalog at Transfiguration and we are very proud of the fact that we are the only parish in the city of Chicago to do so. Secondly Flores De Maria celebrates the many titles of Mary and the many ways that she has positively influenced people and cultures for the 2,000 year history of Christianity.
We celebrated Mass at 5 pm and that included a procession of children and adults including beautiful women who were acknowledged as queens of the various titles of Mary. After Mass we formed a large procession complete with the arches of flowers. The procession went for several blocks around Transfiguration and drew many spectators and interested onlookers. It really is a great combination of the pageantry of our faith and the street reality of Chicago. We are a city that enjoys street festivals and parties on our block. We block off certain streets to celebrate and our celebrations are often right on the street itself. Flores De Maria included that and helped us to share our pride in Mary and the Filipino culture. A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

Esta semana celebramos la Solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Esta fiesta nos ayuda a ver la presencia VERDADERA de Jesus en el Pan hecho en Cuerpo y el Vino hecho en Sangre, tenemos un modo especifico para conectar con nuestro Señor. Este acto simple e ingenioso de Jesus nos alimenta espiritualmente y nos ayuda a valorar la presencia de todos como tambien la de Dios.

Tambien celebramos el dia Memorial que nos indica a que recordemos los que han fallecido defiendiendo y creando el estandarte de libertad que tenemos cada dia. Un buen modo de celebrar es asistiendo a Misa en cualquiera de las dos parroquias, en Transfiguracion a las 8:15 AM y en San Matias a las 9 AM.

La semana pasada tuvimos dos celebraciones - Nuestro Festival Global el sabado en la escuela de San Matias Transfiguracion y nuestras Flores De Maria el domingo en Transfiguracion. Quiero agredecerle a Deb Bukovy quien coordino el Mercadeo y la Publicidad en nuestra escuela y muchos padres, hijos, y empleados que trabajaron duro por este evento multi-cultural maravilloso. En el proximo boletin les dare mas detalles de nuestro Festival Global.

Flores de Maria es una celebracion Filipina festiva que marca dos cosas. Primero que todo cada año celebramos el aniversario de la Misa en Tagalo en Transfiguracion. Por los ultimos ocho años hemos tenido Misa en Tagalo en Transfiguracion cada domingo y estamos muy orgullosos de que somos la unica parroquia en la ciudad de Chicago en tenerla. Segundo, Flores de Maria celebra varios titulos de Maria y los diferentes modos que ella ha influenciado a diferentes personas y culturas durante los 2,000 años de Cristiandad.

Celebramos la Misa a las 5 PM y eso incluyo una procesion de niños y adultos incluyendo a mujeres hermosas que fueron reconocidas como reinas de diferentes titulos de Maria. Despues de Misa formamos una procesion grande con arcos de flores. La procesion siguio por muchas cuadras alrededor de Transfiguracion y mucha gente que caminaba se intrigo. Es una buena combinacion de nuestra fe y la realidad de las calles de Chicago. Somos una ciudad que disfruta festivales de calle y fiestas de cuadra. Bloqueamos ciertas calles para celebrar y nuestras celebraciones a veces son en la propia calle. Flores de Maria incluyo eso y nos ayudo a demostrar nuestro orgullo de Maria y la cultura Filipina. To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

Once again this weekend finds us celebrating not just one but many significant things. Our Global Fest celebrates the multi ethnic richness of our community and our parishes. I want to thank all of those who participated in the Mass and particularly our students and faculty at St. Matthias Transfiguration School for working so hard to make our Global Fest such a festive time.

At Transfiguration we are celebrating Flores de Maria and the 8th Year Anniversary of the Tagalog Mass (at 5 pm on Sundays) coordinated by the Misang Filipino Core Group. I want to thank all of those who worked so hard to make this day a celebration of the Blessed Mother and Filipino culture. Transfiguration is the ONLY parish in the City of Chicago that offers Mass in Tagalog every Sunday.

Finally our Church around the globe celebrates the feast of the Trinity and this piece of our Catholic wisdom invites us to see just how special God is. The belief of the Trinity urges us to embrace a God who Creates us, Redeems us and Sanctifies us in three persons, yet is united into one God. May we never take God for granted or take lightly the fact that we honor the Triune God each time we make the sign of the cross and name God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Long time and faithful St. Matthias parishioners Bob and Colleen Miller gave me some very interesting news this past week. Their son Patrick Miller (St. Matthias School class of 1984), who lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife Laura, came in First Place in the first round of the American Home Brewers Association competition with his Pilsner Beer that he has named St. Matthias. Thanks Patrick and good luck in the second round of competition in Ohio next month. Did you also know that among other things St. Matthias is the patron Saint of Alcoholics.

This week I am starting to reprint excerpts from a pamphlet called, “Why Do We Have To Go To Mass?” written by Lorene Hanley Duquin and published by Our Sunday Visitor. She writes: “Whether you are eight years old or in your eighties, at some point in your life you’ve probably struggled with the question, “Why do we have to go to Mass?’

• You just may not feel like going to Mass
• You may not like the music or the homilies in your parish
• You may think Mass is boring
• You may feel as if the parish is not welcoming
• You may try to convince yourself that you can pray just as well outdoors or in the comfort of your own home

THE POWER OF NEGATIVE THINKING
Even though you know that going to Mass is a good thing, you can talk yourself out of going by focusing on the negatives. At first, you may feel a little guilty, but eventually, you can justify your decision by convincing yourself that you are too busy, too tired, too bored or too frustrated. When this happens, you miss the great gift that God gives to us in the Eucharist.”

I hope that this opening and the passages from the pamphlet that will be reprinted here in the coming weeks will help us all to reflect on the importance of going to Mass and how it helps us to connect with God, Jesus and each other. Please remember that no form of worship is perfect. Going to Mass will never fulfill ALL of our spiritual needs, but it is so important for us to receive the REAL presence of the Lord and to strengthen the communal prayer with our presence and our participation.

Esta semana otra vez estamos celebrando muchas cosas importantes. Nuestro Festival Global celebra la riqueza de nuestra comunidad y parroquias multiétnicas. Quiero agradecer a todos los que participaron en la Misa y especialmente a los estudiantes y empleados de la Escuela de San Matías Transfiguración por trabajar duro para hacer nuestro Festival Global muy festivo.

Estamos celebrando las Flores de Maria y el 8vo Aniversario de la Misa en Tagalo (a las 5 PM los domingos) coordinada por el Grupo Misang Filipino Core en Transfiguración. Quiero agradecerle a todos los que trabajaron duro por hacer esta celebración por nuestra Bendita Madre y la cultura Filipina. Transfiguración es la UNICA parroquia en la Ciudad de Chicago que ofrece Misa en Tagalo todos los domingos.

Finalmente por todo el mundo nuestra Iglesia celebra la fiesta de la Trinidad y esta parte de nuestra sabiduría Católica nos invita a ver que tan especial es Dios. La creencia de la Trinidad nos invita a aceptar a Dios quien nos Crea, nos Redime, y nos Santifica en tres personas, aun siendo unido dentro de un Dios. Ojala que no demos por sentado a Dios ni tomar a la ligera que honramos a un Dios Tres en Uno cada vez que hacemos la señal de la cruz y el nombre de Dios como Padre, Hijo, y Espíritu Santo.

Bob y Colleen Miller, feligreses de San Matías desde hace mucho tiempo me dieron una noticia interesante la semana pasada. Su hijo Patrick Miller (Graduado de San Matías en 1984), quien vive en Pórtland, Oregon con su esposa, Laura, saco el Primer puesto en la primer etapa de una competencia de la Asociación de los American Home Brewers con su Cerveza Pilsner a la cual le puso de nombre San Matías. Gracias Patrick y buena suerte el próximo mes en la segunda etapa de la competencia en Ohio. También sabían que San Matías es el santo patrono de los Alcohólicos.

Esta semana estoy empezando a reimprimir frases de un panfleto llamado, “¿Porque Tenemos que Ir a Misa?” escrito por Lorene Hanley Duquin y publicado por Our Sunday Visitor. Ella escribe: “Aunque tenga ocho años o este en sus ochenta, en algún momento de su vida se ha preguntado, “¿Porque tenemos que ir a Misa?”

• Puede ser que no tiene ánimos para ir a Misa
• Puede ser que no le gusta la música ni las homilías de su parroquia
• Puede ser que piensa que la Misa es aburrida
• Puede ser que no siente que su parroquia le de la bienvenida
• Puede ser que se trate de convencer de que puede rezar afuera o en su propia casa

EL PODER DE LOS PENSAMIENTOS NEGATIVOS
Aunque sabes que ir a Misa es algo bueno, puedes convencerte de no ir cuando piensas en lo negativo. Al principio, te puedes sentir culpable, pero eventualmente, justificas tu decisión cuando te convences de que estas muy ocupado, muy cansado, muy aburrido, o muy frustrado. Cuando esto pasa, te pierdes del regalo maravilloso que Dios nos da en la Eucaristía.”

Espero que estos pasajes del panfleto que escribiré aquí en las semanas que vienen nos ayuden a reflexionar en la importancia de ir a Misa y como nos ayuda a conectarnos con Dios, Jesús, y con el resto del mundo. Por favor recuerden que ninguna forma de veneración es perfecta. Yendo a Misa nunca llenara TODAS nuestras necesidades espirituales, pero es tan importante para que recibamos la presencia VERDADERA de nuestro Señor y fortalecer la oración comunal con nuestra presencia y nuestra participación.

This weekend we celebrate Pentecost and Mothers Day. The Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples at Pentecost to enable them to do things that they didn’t think they could. The Holy Spirit expanded and strengthened them to accomplish so much. It strikes me that most mothers have this experience almost every day. The following article expresses the challenges and triumphs of motherhood like few I have ever read. It was written by Pat Glunz who passed away recently. Her and her husband Jack have not only raised a great family but assisted us in the Lincoln Square community with many events through the family business, Louis Glunz Beer Inc. from Lincolnwood, Illinois. Please enjoy Pat’s reflections about motherhood which were first published in her parish bulletin at St. Francis Xavier, Wilmette, Illinois in 1978.

What Does It Mean To Be A Mother?
It means God has blessed a woman and given her the privilege of sharing in His miracle of creation, the beginning of the most important career a woman can pursue.

The Latin “gentrix” means, “she who begets, communicates life with her own life.” In the fulfillment of this career, a mother accepts the sacrifices, the self-denial and the responsibility of educating, that being a mother demands. And as in any career well done, she will receive the rewards of her hard work. What is the beginning like…It involves pain, sleepless nights, constant vigil and constant tiredness. It also involves the unspeakable joy of watching God’s perfect miracle grow before your very eyes- the knowledge of total dependence and self satisfying realization of being needed. Love is an easy word to understand at this time. It’s so simple and uncomplicated. To me the hardest part is the second phase, the education, the longest period. Rudyard Kipling said, “Give me the first ten years of a child’s life and I will make you welcome the rest; and of these ten years the first three count for six. As a child is, so will be the adult.” How does a mother do this? To a child it is simple: good is what pleases mother and what she permits. Bad is what displeases mother and what she forbids. In other words, she does this by her words and her example. Words are of prime importance, because they express notions and feelings; and a child’s notions and feelings depend largely on the spoken word she/he hears. In those first ten years, this is a demanding, but rewarding experience. The development of a child’s moral character, as well as, the mental development is a challenge. Then comes the reward—the blossoming of a child into an adult. These are the hard years for both mother and child. A mothers love and guidance is needed in a new and different way. It’s a love of trust built on those early foundation years. Trust tempered by common sense. The child remembers the lessons taught but the child/adult wants to question the basic premise. This is the time of humility for mothers. Suddenly from knowing everything in your child’s eyes, you know nothing. The home you so lovingly decorated is suddenly not good enough for your teenager’s friends. Or how about when that beautiful outfit your husband loves to see you in, suddenly gets the teenager’s look of “you’re going to wear that!” You smile and say “yes”, while your confidence crumbles, then you find the same teenager wearing it the next weekend. It is the example that triumphs. All the teaching in the world about principles of loyalty, generosity and purity is wiped out by the sight of one lie, one act of selfishness; of immodesty. When a mother has imprinted on the soul of her child the loyalty, generosity, purity and other virtues that fill her own soul she may rest assured the later vicious tendencies will never efface them. The child may go astray, but he or she will move in a curve which will of necessity bring them back one day to their starting point.

What then is the reward of a mother’s career? To see her child frown to mankind and womanhood, practicing the virtues she taught and practiced. Is it a hard career?—yes—but anything of worth is worth working hard for. A very wise mother showed me a copy of an article she carries with her to remind her that her children don’t always understand her career, but it’s the results that matter. It’s written by a mother who looks at life with love and a laugh, two important ingredients in being a mother. The author is Irma Bombeck and is entitled “Someday I’ll Tell My Children.”

“You don’t love me!” How many times have your kids laid that one on you? And how many times have you, as a parent, resisted the urge to tell them how much? Someday, when my children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a mother, I’ll tell them: I loved you enough to bug you about where you were going, and with whom, and what time you would get home. I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover that your hand-picked friend was a creep. I loved you enough to make you return the Milky Way with a bite out of it to the drugstore and confess, “I stole this.” I loved you enough to stand over you for two hours while you cleaned your bedroom, a job that would have taken me 15 minutes.

I loved you enough to NOT make excuses for your lack of respect and bad manners. I loved you enough to ignore “what every other mother” did. I loved you enough to figure you would lie about the party being chaperoned but forgive you for it…after discovering that I was right. I loved you enough to let you stumble, fall and fail so that you could learn to stand alone. I loved you enough to accept you for what you are, not what I wanted you to be. But most of all, I loved you enough to say no when you hated me for it. That was the hardest part of all

Esta semana celebramos Pentecostés y el Día de las Madres. El Espíritu Santo descendió sobre los discípulos en el día Pentecostés para ayudarlos a hacer cosas que no pensaban que podían hacer. El Espíritu Santo aumento y los fortaleció a lograr mucho. Me impresiona que casi todas las madres tienen esta experiencia casi todos los días. El siguiente articulo expresa los retos y triunfos de la maternidad como ninguno que he leído. Fue escrito por Pat Glunz quien falleció hace poco. Ella y su esposo Jack criaron una maravillosa familia y también nos asistieron con muchos eventos en la comunidad de Lincoln Square con su negocio familiar, Louis Glunz Beer Inc. de Lincolnwood, Illinois. ¿Que Significa Ser Una Madre?
Significa que Dios ha bendito a una mujer y le ha dado el privilegio de brindar su Milagro de la creación, el principio de la carrera más importante que una mujer puede aspirar.

La palabra latina "gentrix" significa, "ella que engendra, comunica la vida con su propia vida." En el cumplimiento de esta carrera, una madre acepta los sacrificios, la abnegación y responsabilidad de educar, que se requiere de una madre. Y como en cualquier carrera bien hecha, ella recibirá los premios de su trabajo duro. Como es el principio... Involucra dolor, noches sin dormir, vigilia constante y cansancio. también requiere la felicidad indecible de ver el milagro perfecto crecer ante tus propios ojos - conocimiento de dependencia total y la realización de satisfacción personal de ser necesitada. Una palabra fácil de entender en este momento es amor. Es tan simple. Para mi lo mas difícil es la segunda fase. Rudyard Kipling dijo, "Dame los primeros diez años de la vida de un niño y te recibiré el resto, y de esos diez años los primeros tres cuentan por seis. Como es de niño, así será como adulto." ¿Como hace esto una madre? Para un niño es simple: lo bueno es lo que complace a la madre y lo que ella permite. Lo malo es lo que no la complace y lo que prohíbe. En otras palabras, ella hace esto con sus palabras y con su ejemplo. Las palabras de importancia, porque expresan nociones y sentimientos; y las nociones y sentimientos de un niño dependen mucho en las palabras que escuchan. En los primeros diez años, esto es exigente, pero una experiencia que recompensa mucho. El desarrollo del carácter moral, así como, el desarrollo mental es un reto. Después viene la recompensa -- el florecimiento de un niño a un adulto. Estos son años muy difíciles para madre e hijo. El amor y la orientación de una madre se necesita da manera nueva y diferente. Es un amor de confianza creado en esos años de la primera etapa. La confianza moderada con un sentido común. El niño recuerda las lecciones pero el niño/ adulto quiere poner en duda el recinto básico. Esto es una temporada de humildad para las madres. De ver todo en los ojos de tu hijo de repente no sabes nada. La casa que decoraste con tanto amor de repente no es suficiente para los amigos de tu hijo adolescente. O como cuando tu hijo te mira diciendo, "¡te vas a poner eso!" cuando te pones el vestido bello que le en endad en ti misma se disminuye, después encuentras la misma muchacha vestida así la próxima semana. Es un ejemplo de triunfos. Todas las enseñanzas del mundo sobre los principios de lealtad, generosidad, y pureza se borran en vista de una mentira, un acto de egoísmo; de inmodestia. Cuando una madre ha estampado en el alma de su hijo la lealtad, generosidad, y pureza y demás virtudes que llenan su propia alma, ella puede descansar segura de que las malas tendencias nunca se borraran. El niño puede extraviarse, pero el o ella seguirán en una curva que por necesidad los llevaran un día al principio.

¿Que es el premio para la carrera de madre? Ver a su hijo llegar a ser hombre y mujer, practicando virtudes que les enseño y practico. ¿Es una carrera difícil? – si – pero cualquier cosa de valor vale la pena. Una madre inteligente me mostró una copia de un articulo que siempre carga con ella para recordarle que sus hijos no siempre entienden su carrera, pero lo que mas importa son los resultados. Esta escrito por una madre que ve su vida con amor y risa, dos ingredientes importantes para ser madre. La autora es Irma Bombeck y se llama “Algún Día le Diré a Mis Hijos.”

“No me quires!” ¿Cuantas veces tus hijos te han dicho eso? ¿Y cuantas veces tú, como madre, has resistido decirles cuanto? Algún día, cuando mis hijos crezcan como para entender la lógica que motiva a una madre, les diré: Te quise lo suficiente como para molestarte cuando salías, y con quien, y a que horas llegarías. Te quise tanto como para callarme y dejarte descubrir que el amigo que escogiste no es bueno. Te quise tanto como para hacer que le devolvieras a la farmacia el chocolatín que mordiste diciéndoles, “Yo me robe esto.” Te quise tanto como para pararme frente a ti por dos horas hasta que limpiaras tu cuarto, algo que hubiera tomado 15 minutos. To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

We celebrate the Feast of the Ascension this weekend. Traditionally this feast was reserved for a Thursday and at certain times the Bishops of North America give us the option to move the celebration to the weekend which we did this year. We will also have May Crownings this weekend at ALL Masses at BOTH Parishes. Our CCD and St. Matthias Transfiguration School Children will assist us in making a prayerful presentation to Mary who we acknowledge as Queen of many aspects of our church. These are two important aspects of the Easter season and may our liturgies this weekend be representative of our belief that Jesus Ascended into heaven and that Mary holds such an important place in salvation history.

One of the most uplifting things about The Easter Season is the hope and excitement of new life that it brings. Jesus moved through suffering and death to new life in the Resurrection. New life can be experienced in so many ways and the fact that spring is here in Chicago helps us to see new life in the form of grass, buds and warmer weather that is particularly welcomed after a long cold winter. Through our Stewardship efforts, St. Matthias and Transfiguration Parishes have experienced new life because so many of you have shared your TIME, TALENT and TREASURE to strengthen our community. This has been particularly evident in the past several months. Since we began the Stewardship program St. Matthias has seen a 25% increase in weekly collections and 151 parishioners signing up to participate in various ministries. Transfiguration has seen a 10% increase in weekly collections and 8 parishioners have signed up to be a part of various parish ministries. I thank all of you who have increased your contributions to our parishes by giving of your TIME,TALENT and TREASURE. Particularly in the area of weekly giving, the new life that we are experiencing will assist us in building a strong future.

That strong future is also based on continuous efforts to cut administrative costs and at the same time try to be more of service and more efficient. Technological advancements will help us a great deal in this area and part of our administrative changes will include updating our office services through the assistance of the J.S. Paluch Company who has developed new computer programs that will provide more accurate tracking of collections, registering new parishioners and keeping track of the records of existing parishioners.

I want to thank Deacon Roland Merced, Sol Anderson and our many Novena Sponsors for making the Divine Mercy Celebrations so prayerful. They were also able to generate a generous $1,000 donation to Transfiguration parish. Many thanks.

Our Annual Global Fest will be on Saturday, May 17 beginning with a festive, multi ethnic Mass at 5 pm at St. Matthias. If you would like to be a part of this special liturgy by marching in the procession, carrying a flag and possibly wearing any ethnic costume or outfit, or participate by doing reading, bringing up gifts or any other participation, please call either rectory to let us know.

St. Matthias Transfiguration School continues to grow. We are opening a new 3 year old Pre-School Program next year to compliment the current 3 and 4 year old program. We are also holding a special gathering for any families with a child who will be entering 5th grade in the Fall. This gathering will take place on Wednesday, May 14 at 7 pm at our school located at 4820 N. Claremont. Our Principal Sandria DeSapio and I will be present to give a tour of the school and to answer any questions that you might have. We have generous, needs based and other scholarships available and you will be able to find out more information on that evening or simply call St. Matthias Transfiguration School at 784-0999. If any of you who are current parishioners know of families who might be interested in the school, please personally invite them to attend this gathering or to contact the school.

A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

Esta semana celebramos la Fiesta de Ascensión. Tradicionalmente esta fiesta solo era los jueves y a veces los Obispos de Norte América nos dan la opción de pasar esta celebración para el fin de semana como lo hicimos este año. Este fin de semana también tendremos las Coronaciones de Mayo en TODAS las Misas en AMBAS Parroquias. Nuestros niños de CCD y de la Escuela de San Matías Transfiguración nos ayudaran a hacer una presentación a la Virgen quien reconocemos como Reina en todos los aspectos de la iglesia. Estos son dos aspectos importantes de la temporada de la Pascua y ojala la liturgia de este fin de semana sea representativo en nuestra creencia de que Jesús Ascendió al cielo y que Maria es muy importante en la historia de la salvación.

Una de las cosas mas animantes de la Temporada de la Pascua es la esperanza y el entusiasmo que trae con la vida nueva. Jesús pasó por el sufrimiento y la muerta a una vida nueva en la Resurrección. La vida nueva se puede sentir en varias maneras y ya que llego la primavera a Chicago podemos ver la vida nueva en forma de pasto, flores, y un clima mas caluroso que es muy bienvenida después de un invierno largo. Con nuestros esfuerzos de Administración, las Parroquias de San Matías y Transfiguración han sentido vida nueva porque muchos de ustedes han brindado su TIEMPO, TALENTO, y TESORO para fortalecer nuestra comunidad. Esto especialmente se ha visto en los pasados meses. Desde que empezamos nuestro programa de Administración San Matías ha visto un aumento de 25% en la colecta semanal y 151 feligreses se han anotado a participar en varios ministerios. Transfiguración ha visto un aumento del 10% en la colecta semanal y 8 feligreses se han anotado a ser parte de los ministerios. Les agradezco a todos que hayan aumentado en su contribución a nuestras parroquias prestando su TIEMPO, TALENTO, y TESORO. Especialmente en dar semanalmente, la vida nueva que estamos sintiendo nos ayudara a construir un futuro mas fuerte.

Nuestro Festival Anual Global será el sábado, 17 de mayo empezando con una festiva, Misa multi-étnica a las 5 PM en San Matías. Si les gustaría ser parte de desta liturgia especial caminando en procesión, llevano una bandera, o quizás poniéndose un disfraz, vestido, o algún otro traje típico, o leyendo una lectura, llevando las ofrendas, o cualquier otra participación, por favor avísennos en cualquiera de las dos rectorías

Ese futuro fuerte también esta basado en los esfuerzos continuos de cortar costos administrativos y también ser más serviciales y eficientes. Los avances tecnológicos nos ayudaran muchísimo y parte de los cambios administrativos incluirán actualizando nuestros servicios de oficina con la ayuda de la Compañía J.S. Paluch que ha desarrollado nuevos programas de computador para rastrear mas precisamente las colectas, registrar a feligreses nuevos, y rastrear los registros de feligreses actuales.

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

Please see the list on the cover of today’s bulletin of our children who will be receiving the Sacrament of First Communion. Please keep them in your prayers and know that they are well prepared for this important moment in their faith journey. I want to thank those who have been working closely with them in preparation for their First Communion, namely, their Catechists and teachers. From our CCD program Adelina Vergara, Leah Bertke and Maitha Abogato. Our St. Matthias Transfiguration School second grade teacher is Tammy Plewa. These dedicated teachers have been sharing their faith and the wisdom of the church with these young parishioners and we thank them for their dedication. Many thanks to our Director of Religious Education Karyn McGovern and our Principal Sandria DeSapio for their leadership and generosity. We had a First Communion Mass in English at St. Matthias and two First Communion Masses at Transfiguration in Spanish this Saturday because of the large number of children. May God bless these children and their parents as they continue their journey of faith.

As the Easter Season continues we have several important events coming up. The Feast of the Ascension will be celebrated on Sunday, May 4. That weekend we will also have May Crownings at ALL Masses at BOTH parishes. Children from St. Matthias Transfiguration School and our CCD Program will crown Mary at each Mass including the 5 PM Masses on Saturday, May 3. The big procession and outdoor May Crowning will take place at the 9:30 Mass at Trans and a larger procession will be a part of the 11:30 Mass at St. Matthias. Pentecost will bring the Easter Season to a close on Sunday, May 11 which is also Mothers Day.

Please take the time to read these descriptions, pray about which ones you wish to join and then fill out the following form and place it in the collection basket or return it to the rectory. Por favor vean la lista de la portada del boletín de nuestros niños que recibirán el Sacramento de la Primera Comunión. Por favor manténganlos en sus oraciones y sepan que están preparados para este momento tan importante en su camino de fe. Quiero darle las gracias a todos que han ayudado a prepararlos para la Primera Comunión, especialmente los Catequistas y los profesores. De nuestro programa de CCD, Adelina Vergara, Leah Bertke, y Maitha Abogato. Nuestra profesora de segundo grado en la Escuela de San Matías Transfiguración es Tammy Plewa. Estos profesores han estado brindado su fe y conocimiento de la iglesia con estos jóvenes feligreses y les agradecemos por su dedicación. Muchas gracias a nuestra Directora de Educación Religiosa, Karyn McGovern y a nuestra Directora de la escuela, Sandria DeSapio por su liderazgo y generosidad. Este sábado tuvimos una Misa de Primera Comunión en ingles en San Matías y dos Misas en español en Transfiguración porque había muchos niños. Que Dios bendiga a estos niños y a sus padres mientras siguen con su camino de fe.

Mientras sigue la Temporada de Pascua tenemos muchos eventos importantes que se avecinan. La Fiesta de Ascensión la celebraremos el domingo, 4 de mayo. Esa semana también tendremos la Coronación de la Virgen en TODAS las Misas en AMBAS parroquias. Los niños de la Escuela de San Matías Transfiguración y los de nuestro Programa de CCD coronaran a la Virgen durante cada Misa incluyendo a las Misas de las 5 PM el sábado, 3 de mayo. La procesión y la coronación será afuera a las 9:30 en Transfiguración y la procesión mas grande será a las 11:30 en San Matías.

El día de Pentecostés cerrara la Temporada de Pascua el domingo, 11 de mayo empezando con una Misa multi-étnica y festiva a las 5 PM en San Matías. Si quieren participar vistiéndose con un disfraz o traje étnico, o leyendo, llevando las ofrendas, o cualquier otra cosa, por favor avísennos en cualquiera de las dos rectorías. Por favor consideren apoyar a Transfiguración con su compra de boletos ($10 cada uno) para la Rifa del carro o vendiéndole boletos a sus amigos.

El Padre Américo regresara al Brasil TEMPORALMENTE. El se ira esta semana y regresa el 3 de julio. Que tenga buen viaje Padre Américo.

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

We celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter this weekend. The story of the early church is being told through our readings from the Acts of the Apostles and other New Testament stories. Primarily from the Gospel of John we are hearing Jesus refer to himself in simple and tender images such as, “I am the Sheepgate.” We are moving toward two powerful early church experiences in the Ascension and Pentecost. This week we listen to the story of the first seven Deacons of the Church. They were men who embraced the ministry of service and fulfilled a critical role in the community. Deacons to this day are ordained through the imposition of hands by a Bishop that ritualistically calls down the Holy Spirit on them. Deacon is an official office of the church (Along with Presbyter or Priest and Bishop). Deaconate can be a step towards priesthood or it can be a permanent office such as the Deacons we are familiar with in our community, Roland Merced and D.J.Shinkle.

The Gospel gives us hope in that at a significant moment of grief when the disciples’ hearts are “troubled” Jesus acknowledges their pain and urges them to have faith in him. He once again makes definitive statements about who he is. “I am the way, the truth and the life.” He says, and goes on to confirm his unity with God the Father. Such statements are critical to our belief that God is Father, Son and Spirit. We call this belief the Trinity and it helps us to embrace God as creator, sanctifier and redeemer. May we continue to draw strength and inspiration from these stories of courageous people in the early church.

Global Fest is coming again on Saturday, May 17. This is a big gathering that celebrates the ethnic diversity of our community. The event kicks off with a multi ethnic Mass at 5 pm at St. Matthias and then continues with lots of fun in our School and Hall. Each room is transformed into a different country or state by the talent of our students and parents. If you would be interested in sponsoring a room there is a small $250 donation that entitles you to wristband admission, signage in the school, acknowledgement in the bulletin and program, special seating during the Mass and the overall good, warm feeling that comes from supporting our school and the future of our students. If you are interested in participating in the Festive, Multi Ethnic Mass and perhaps wearing any costume, dress or other garb that celebrates your ethnic identity in the procession at the beginning of Mass, please call me at St. Matthias rectory. Also there will be a Kick-Off event for Global Fest at the Ravenswood Pub on Saturday, May 3. Rumor has it that there will be two special and expert bar tenders, Fr. John Sanaghan and Sandria DeSapio our Principal. Details are found in this bulletin and at St. Matthias Transfiguration School.

Transfiguration Church, St. Matthias Church and I are featured in an exhibit called Catholic Chicago at the Chicago Historical Museum located at 1601 N. Clark St. The exhibit includes interviews, photos, guided tours and much more celebrating the strong Catholic culture here in Chicago. The exbit runs until January of 2009. A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

Esta semana celebramos el quinto domingo de Pascua. Las lecturas de los Hechos de los Apóstoles y otras historias del Nuevo Testamento hablan de la Iglesia antigua. Especialmente en el Evangelio de Juan escuchamos a Jesús que se refiere a si mismo con imágenes simples y tiernas como, “Yo soy el Cordero de Dios.” Nos movemos hacia dos experiencias poderosas de la Iglesia antigua, la Ascensión y Pentecostés. Escuchamos la historia de los primeros siete diáconos de la iglesia esta semana. Eran hombres que aceptaron el ministerio de servicio tuvo un rol critico en la comunidad. Hasta el momento, los diáconos se ordenan por la imposición de las manos de un Obispo que llama al Espíritu Santo hacia ellos. El diacono es un puesto oficial de la iglesia (así como el Presbítero o Sacerdote u Obispo). El diaconado puede ser un paso hacia el sacerdocio o puede ser un puesto permanente como los diáconos que tenemos en nuestra comunidad, Roland Merced y D.J.Shinkle.

El Evangelio nos da esperanza de que en un momento importante de dolor cuando los corazones de los discípulos están “afligidos,” Jesús reconoce el dolor y les sugiere a que tengan fe en el. El dice cosas definitivas sobre quien es el. “Soy el camino, la verdad, y la vida.” Lo dice, y después confirma su unión a Dios el Padre. Estas declaraciones son críticas para nuestra creencia de que Dios es Padre, Hijo, y Espíritu Santo. A esta creencia le llamamos la Trinidad y nos ayuda a aceptar a Dios como creador, santificador, y redentor. Espero que sigamos sacando fortaleza e inspiración de estas historias de las personas valientes de la iglesia antigua.

El Festival Global será el sábado, 17 de mayo. Esto es un evento grande que celebra la diversidad étnica de nuestra comunidad. El evento empieza con una Misa multi-étnica a las 5 PM en San Matías y después continua con mucha diversión en nuestra Escuela y el Salón. Cada salón será transformado en diferentes países o estados usando el talento de nuestros estudiantes y padres.
