SPRED
Parishes Working Together

SPRED is a collaborative effort among the parishes in a local area. We all share a common vision – to welcome
children, teens, and adults with special needs into the worshipping and sacramental life of our parish
communities. To assure that these experiences are meaningful and enriching to the faith of our friends with
developmental disabilities, SPRED offers catechesis specifically tailored to their needs. Through shared
friendship, reflection on life rooted in scripture and prayer, these small communities grow together in faith as
they deepen their awareness of God and their personal relationship with Jesus. Where friends gather together
in love – the presence of Jesus is discovered, welcomed and embraced.

This opportunity is available to children (6-10) at St. Benedict Parish; teens (11-16) at St. Edward & Our Lady of Lourdes; young adults (17-21) St. Matthias at Transfiguration; and at Queen of Angels, St. Mary of the Lake & St. Gregory for adults (22+). St. Andrew Parish is presently trying to rebuild their SPRED Community for 11-16 year old teens. All of these groups are searching for new volunteers as they prepare to begin sessions this fall. People in this cluster of parishes have the option to participate in a SPRED community of their choosing according the age level and location or meeting schedule that is preferred. There will be a meeting hosted by St. Andrew Parish to offer information on the SPRED mission in general and tell you about the expectations for a SPRED volunteer. There is no need for experience with persons with disabilities or any special background or education. All training is provided by the SPRED agency for the comfort of our volunteers and to insure the quality of our program. Please – consider joining us for a simple gathering of conversation and hospitality to learn more about this very rewarding ministry. Parents of children with disabilities – please join us to be sure that your son or daughter’s name is on the waiting list for a Spred community.

Monday – July 21st at 7:30 PM
St. Andrew Parish Rectory
3546 N. Paulina

Should this meeting be at an inconvenient time for you, call Julia Hess at Queen of Angels Parish Center to set up a personal appointment: 773-539-3634 or Julia.spredcrw@sbcglobal.net

MEN’S RETREAT

Are you a man who is ready to go deeper into your spirituality this summer than a weekend retreat or Theology on Tap?

Join us for the Men's Rite of Passage, August 13-17th, with Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM. The program is a fiveday/ four night deeply prayerful and soulful experience that builds on the classic patterns of male initiation through simple and moving rituals and teaching. Each day includes group prayer, major teachings on central masculine spirituality themes, quiet time for reflection, and sharing in the context of a "home group."

This is not just another Catholic/Christian men's retreat, but five days of formal male initiation. These teachings on the "mysteries" and the accompanying rituals of Passover have met with an enthusiastic response in recent years, touching over 3,100 men worldwide.

Are You a Young Shakespeare?

Do not suffer the slings and arrows of a secret gift. Absent thee from anonymity awhile and draw thy pen to write an essay.

The Ravenswood Catholic Young Adults, an organization of residents mostly in their 20s and 30s, is sponsoring an essay contest for high school students. All are eligible to participate who attend St. Benedict High School, attend one of the RCYA member-parishes or whose parent(s) are parishioner(s) in an RCYA memberparish (St. Benedict, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Matthias, Queen of Angels or Transfiguration of Our Lord).

Choose one of the following topics and compose a 250 - to 500-word essay:

  1. “Have you had an unexpected change or conflict in your life recently? Describe what happened and how it affected you. Provide concrete detail. Were other people involved and who were they? What was the resolution, if any, and what other changes do you expect as you look to the future?”
  2. “Name a person in your life—whether family member, friend, teacher, spiritual leader or someone else— who has had a big impact. How did this person influence you and why? Be specific. What is your assessment of how your relationship with him or her has changed, if at all? Do you expect a difference in your future because of him or her and why?”

E-mail your essay in a Word document—with .doc appendix to rcya_chicago@yahoo.com. Include your name, phone number and affiliation (whether you are student at St. Benedict High School or what parish you or your parent(s) belong to). Entries will be judged by Craig Barner, an RCYA member and veteran journalist; John Schmitz, also an RCYA member and Chicago Public High School teacher and freelance writer; and Fr. Terry Keehan, pastor of St. Matthias. The decision of the judges is final.

Irving Park Rd following 6:30 p.m. Mass at St. Benedict (around 7:30 p.m. at Resi's). All are welcome, your ideas on improving the organization and volunteer spirit are needed. Unless otherwise specified, the meetings are the 4th Sunday of the month immediately following Mass at St. Benedict. Contact RCYAChicago@Yahoo.com for more information.5

THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Twenty-third Psalm, today’s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads “Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage” (Psalm 23:4) connects this week’s scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

THE JOURNEY OF TRANSFIGURATION

“We used to be such good friends. How is it that you’ve moved so far away?” one man asked another. “Perhaps,” the other replied, “you have moved away. By standing still.” This exchange very well could have happened between Peter and Jesus, had Peter been allowed to erect tents to stay on the mount of the Transfiguration. He nearly succumbed to the temptation to stay in a place of wonder and light. But Jesus knew the hard truth: we are on a continual journey when we are walking the paths of God’s will. It is not good for us to stay in one place on our faith journey. Equally unhealthy is staying put in times of joy and wonder to avoid life’s difficulties, or to wallow in our trials and temptations and fail to be companions for our sisters and brothers who are also suffering—or celebrating! The pilgrim Church is required to do one thing on its Lenten journey: to walk continually with Christ as his Body born of water and the Spirit, seeking God’s will, helping the reign of God to be known on earth, being led to the end of our journey, transfigured for all time into the company of heaven.

St. Benedict High School Host Live Art Auction Feb. 8

Still searching for that affordable piece of art to hang on that bare wall in your home? Tired of looking at that boring picture in your apartment you got 20 years ago? Holiday money burning in your pocket? Looking for a fun night out with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres?

Your answer may be in attending St. Benedict High School’s live art auction at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in the school gym at 3941 N. Bell Ave. near Irving Park Road. All proceeds benefit St. Benedict High School, a college prep high school of St. Benedict Parish. The school plans to open a new performing art academy in the 2008-2009 year.

“We sponsored our first art auction last year and the attendance and response were overwhelming,” said Sante Iacovelli, president of the high school. “It was a fun night out. We will auction an even wider variety of quality art at affordable price points. All of the works are custom framed with the finest craftsmanship and materials,” he said. In addition to art, rare sports and music memorabilia will be auctioned.

Ross Galleries of Holbrook, N.Y., has selected the artwork and will conduct the auction. Some of the offerings can be viewed at ajrossauctions.com. They include many different subjects, periods, styles and media, including serigraphs, lithographs, original oils, watercolors, etchings, animation cells, sculpture, and sports and entertainment memorabilia.

Preview of the art is at 7 p.m. with the auction at 8 p.m.

Admission is $10 and includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, champagne punch, coffee, sweet table and a cash bar.
