Lincoln Square Christkindl Market

The 2nd Annual Chicago Lincoln Square Christkindl Market
December 4-6
Our Twist on a German Tradition

The second annual Lincoln Square Christkindl Market kicks off December 4-6! This year promises to bring the sites, sounds and flavors of the season to the square. Strolling musicians, holiday lights and ice sculptures will adorn the streets in the square at Lincoln and Leland.

Under the big heated tent, traditional German food, bratwurst, potato pancakes, goulash and apple strudel will tempt your taste buds. Sip on warm Gluewhein as you listen to traditional Christmas carols or toast with an authentic German Bier!

“The Lincoln Square Christkindl Market brings our square alive with tradition, family and fun during the holiday season, and that’s what make’s Lincoln Square unique. The chamber is proud to be a cohost of this fine event once again and is thrilled to have the support of 47th Ward Alderman Gene Schulter,” said Melissa Flynn, Executive Director of the Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce.

Dozens of community and high school choirs will sing during the day at the festival and at night a mixture of rock and jazz. There will also be a “Kids Korner” featuring entertainment, arts and crafts and gingerbread cookie decorating. St. Nicholas will also make an appearance at the market everyday.

“The Lincoln Square Christkindl Market is a wonderful event for kids of all ages. St. Matthias is proud to host this event and to help keep the rich German traditions alive in the German neighborhood,” said Rev. John Sanaghan, St. Matthias Parish.

Musical entertainment headlining the three-day market includes “Out For Hours” on Friday, “Captain Blood Orchestra” on Saturday and the “Sabertooth Jazz Quartet” on Sunday evening. Choral groups performing include the “Lincoln Park Singers”, “St. Matthias School Choir.”

Lincoln Square Christkindl Market

History - A centuries-old German tradition

Christmas markets have been part of this festive time for centuries in Germany. They were usually held in front of churches and were looked at as part of a church visit. The oldest recorded market dates to 1310 in Munich, Germany. It was called "Nikolausdult" and was very different from the markets of today. It was an opportunity for farmers to come to town, do some shopping and at the same time, offer their wares.

The reformation of the church in the 16th century brought changes to the Christmas markets. Nikolaus was replaced by the Christkindl (Christchild) as the gift giver and the Nikolaus markets became Christkindl markets. This custom began in the Protestant areas of Bavaria with Nuremberg being the first city to call its market "Christkindlesmarkt." Munich, a Catholic city, changed its "Nikolausdult" to "Christkindlmarkt" in 1805.

In modern times, Christkindl Markets combine the festive atmosphere of heavenly choirs and succulent foods with gift shopping for such items as toys and other presents for children, crafts and gift items.

Today, Lincoln Square the German Center for Chicago and St. Matthias Church are hosting the 2nd Annual Lincoln Square Christkindl Market. The proceeds from the event will benefit St. Matthias Church and School as well as the Lincoln Square Foundation. The Market will offer delicious foods, traditional Glogg, holiday greenery, a children’s area, local farmer market vendors, German artisans, and 3 days of music, singing, and St. Nicholas.

This is a wonderful way to start the holiday season and we encourage everyone to make plans to visit the Market and to bring friends. We are also looking for volunteers, vendors and sponsors (especially sponsors) If you or your family or your business would like to become a sponsor please check the web site lincolnsquareck.com or call the rectory at 773-506-2191.

All Souls Day Memorial Mass Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at Transfiguration

On All Souls Day we remember before God all those for whom we ought to pray and for whom we need to pray. On this day we commemorate the faithful departed relatives, friends and benefactors. Indeed we pray for all of the holy dead and the church calls this All Soul’s Day. The All Souls envelope is not a collection for the parish. The All Souls offering is a special for those families and friends for whom you wish to have prayers said. Please list the names of those who have died and those you wish to be prayed in your monthly envelope packet.

These names will be remembered during the Mass on November 2—8:15 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.(English); 7:00 p.m. (Spanish).

Lincoln Square Christkindl Market

Save the Date! December 4, 5 & 6, 2009 (Lincoln and Leland)

They say that the day after the Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade the team that plans the parade is hard at work planning the next year. That is what it felt like two days after the wine auction when the core group for the Christkindl Market met to discuss this year’s event. More information will be coming in the bulletin but I’d like the entire Parish and School to save the dates of December 4, 5 & 6 for this year Lincoln Square Christkindl Market.

There are numerous ways that anyone and everyone can help make this event become a signature event that is both fun and financially sound for the Lincoln Square Community and St. Matthias Church and School. Look in the bulletin each week or check out both the Church web site and the event web site at lincolnsquareck.com.

A Note from Father John

It’s musical chairs inside the bulletin this week. Fr.John Rudnik has my usual space for his heartfelt tribute to Elizibeth Ledesma on her 20 years of service to Transfiguration Parish. Terry Tuohy, however, was only too delighted to hand over her bulletin space to me-all for a good cause, of course. Actually, a very good cause.

Monday, November 2, just 2 weeks from tomorrow, is All Souls Day. The Church sets aside this day each year to remember in prayer, in reflection, in music and in the company of the whole family of God all those we love who have died. This may be the most genuinely human and universally shared day in the entire Church year.

As graceful as any I’ve seen elsewhere, St. Matthias has a parish tradition of All Souls Day Mass that is simple and solemn, quiet, exquisitely beautiful and very personal. The names of each of your beloved who has died will be marked by the ringing of bells as part of the liturgy. If you wish to have someone you love to be remembered at Mass in this way, please let us know by contacting the rectory or dropping a note with their names in the collection basket next weekend.

Along with names, if you wish, please bring a photograph of those whom you are remembering to God. The pictures are set in the altar before Mass.

Especially invited to our All Souls Day Mass are those who have suffered the loss of a spouse or parent or child; a brother or sister, grandparent, aunt, uncle, a treasured friend, neighbor or mentor over the past year. It’s unfortunate but inevitable that the few days that follow a death of a beloved are so difficult and full for those most affected that they have very little opportunity to reflect, pray and grieve.

All Souls Day can be such a time and I encourage us all to use The opportunity well.

Remember, too, that All Souls Day is not for the recently grieving, alone. The passing years soften pain but they do not erase love and memory. My Mom and Dad died 20 and 24 years ago and I think of them everyday-just now with a smile.

Monday, November 2, is All Souls Day. All are welcome here. All will be in our parish’s prayers and thoughts and hearts. Please invite anyone (including those of other faiths or none) who may benefit by participating in this Liturgy of memory. Bring others for support and friendship. Mass is at 7pm. A table for photographs will be in the aisle. Following our All Souls Mass everyone is invited to stay and chat.

See you there,

Father John Sanaghan

Health Care News

Do you or your family not have insurance? Join fellow parishioners at a Community Forum to ensure that hospitals provide free and reduced priced care to the uninsured in our community! Learn about a proposed law that would improve access to affordable medical care for low income uninsured County residents. This law would encourage private hospitals to share in the responsibility of caring for the unisured, rather than relying on the County public hospital system to bear the lion's share of indigent care. We need you there to show our elected officials that we need this law to pass for the good of our church members and beyond!

Philippines Flooding

Catholic Relief Services has pledged $250,000 to help victims of Typhoon Ketsana who fled their homes following massive flooding caused by the storm as it swept across the Philippines main island of Luzon.

With our partner Caritas Philippines, CRS is providing thousands of families with immediate food aid-rice, canned goods, noodles and vegetable oil-in the aftermath of the storm that left the capital city of Manila under water. We will also provide people affected by the flooding with blankets, mosquito nets, soap and more.

Since smashing into the island on Saturday as a tropical storm, Ketsana, which is known locally as Typhoon Ondoy, has killed dozens and left thousands homeless. “Many of the people who have lost everything are sleeping in schools right now,” says CRS Country Representatives Luc Picard. “They’re calling this the Katrina of the Philippines.”

Twenty-three provinces have declared a “state of calamity.” “Lowlands were especially hard-hit,” continues Picard, “so we’re focusing on coastal areas.” Picard says heavy rains have destroyed houses and infrastructure, and the search for missing people is still ongoing in Manila and in rural areas.

CRS has pledged aid to our partner, Caritas Philippines which is distributing the food and other items to flood survivors. As more information on needs become available, CRS will continue to work closely with Caritas. Our church partners were able to respond immediately,” and we will support them during this incredibly difficult time.”

Please keep the people of the Philippines in your prayers.

Dix ans du Raisin was Magnifique

Developing Developments By Terry Tuohy

I can not begin to tell you how grateful I am to all who worked, donated and supported the 10th Annual Friends of the Grape. We are still processing all of the receipts but it looks very good this year and I will have a complete report in next week’s bulletin.

There is nothing like the leadership and the willingness to lend a helping hand from the volunteers at St. Matthias. I would like to acknowledge the committee: John and Mary Tuttle, Lisa & Chris Comes, Carolyn Moran, Jennifer Holzman, Patty Moran, Chris & Traci Schoenberger, Karen Smith, The Hussars, Judy Figueroa, Anne Stuckel, Joan Hunt, Cynthia Ruiz, Marlene Colella, Anne & Matt McIntee, Grayce O’Toole, Michael McGovern, Scott & Roine Michaels, David & Meggan Flom, Michael Querrey, Gerry Winters, Tom Huser, Bob Ryan, Ivy Torres, Bebe Valencia, Lisa Torres, Dave Connolly, & Alija Vilic. Our success is because of your hard work.

There were numerous nights prior to the event that I worked very late and I kept thinking “,will this event ever get here?” Yet, on Sunday I was amazed at how fast the actual day just flew by. You know how at times at big functions there are so many people and so much activity that it feels like a kaleidoscope and nothing seems real and yet there are snippets of clarity that I believe speaks volumes; a few snippets: opening the kitchen door during the Live Auction and seeing Dorothy Yassan by herself doing a boatload of dishes. I know she had help but at that moment I wanted to hug her for doing a thankless job at a crucial moment. Another image was John O’Connor (Usher at 11:30 Mass) after the auction closed sitting with his prize, a life size cardboard picture of Sylvester Stallone as Rocky- he was beaming like a 10 year old. The group of high school students that pulled the gym back in order very quickly so they could play basketball, and at the end of the night Anne Marie Hussar gathering all the balloons so she could look like a walking bunch of grapes.

I would also like to thank Fr. Terry Keehan who, as our Honorary Chair, continued to support this event by finding new revenue sources and bringing some wonderful people from Holy Family Parish to the this year’s event.
